Seasonal 2nd Mate

The Island Trust is a charity that runs sail training for young people with educational support needs, disabilities or experience of hardship. It is looking for a Seasonal 2nd Mate for Johanna Lucretia, a 96ft traditionally rigged topsail schooner with 12 guest berths, based in Plymouth and sailing along the south Devon and south Cornwall coast. The post runs from 1 March 2027 to 5 November 2027, and the start date can be negotiated.

The role:

• Support the Skipper and 1st Mate in keeping the boat and everyone on board safe
• Work with school and youth group charters, as well as teenage and adult charters
• Take on delegated responsibilities in harbour and on passage, and stand watches on passage
• Prepare for the arrival of charterers and attend to the needs of guests on board
• Help charterers pursue their objectives, as a group or individually
• Assist with maintenance, and carry out routine maintenance during the winter lay-up
• Work in line with the Safety Management System
