Third Hand

Sea-Change Sailing Trust is looking for a Third Hand to join the crew of the engineless sailing barge Blue Mermaid for the 2027 sailing season. The role involves working alongside the Skipper and Mate on sail training voyages for young people. The post is initially self-employed, with a view to advancement subject to performance.

The role:

• Work alongside the Skipper and Mate in delivering sail training voyages
• Supervise and help keep everyone safe on board during sailing activities
• Supervise and support domestic tasks, including food preparation, carried out by young people or group leaders
• Help develop and support the young people on board, both in sailing and pastoral terms
• Assist with the delivery of the ship's routine
• Build confidence and trust in the young people and help them reach their potential

• Knowledge of or empathy with the challenges facing young people, particularly those from areas of financial and social deprivation
• Knowledge of or empathy for young people with special educational needs
• Strong team player with self-starting capabilities, able to work in a small team in a dynamic and demanding environment
• Enthusiasm and a can-do approach to working with young people
• DBS check or willingness to complete one
• Desirable: barge or large vessel experience
• Desirable: youth work or teaching background
